    Sitch on pocket insert....

So the stitch length is the same around the entire perimeter of the map pocket? Inotherwords, when they were sewing around the corners the stitch length stayed uniform. Kewl. I think that may be one way to tell originals from at least one variety of repros then. Whether it applies to 1970 needs to be confirmed also.

Next Q I have is, how does the stitch length on the map pocket insert itself compare with the stitch length on the dash portion? Are they the same? I believe what I have in my '70 is the original dash piece. I know that I have a replacement pocket insert. It's stitching is longer (by about 50% than the stitching on the dash piece). Here's a picture: THingk is, all the cars I've looked at (admittedly there haven't been THAT many) - the stitching on the map pocket insert was significantly longer than that on the dash pieces. QUestion is - was it that way from the factory or has it just been that I've only ever seen repro ones?

Dash and map pocket stitching ... again

I don't know if dash stitching was the same for all years, but I agree with Jack that the original stitching is at an angle. I know we compared an original and repro at Bowling Green in 2000. But this doesn't mean all repros are that way.

The stitching on the map pocket is definitely much longer than that on the dash. I just went to the garage and checked my car, which had the map pocket replaced in the late 1980s with a new one from GM. The stitching on it is an off-white and appears to be consistent all around. While Terry's theory about fading from sunlight makes sense, my original dash stitching is very black, no fading. Is it possible that somewhere the stitching changed with service replacement pieces?

        Re: Sitch on pocket insert....

You see!! the ladies finally made the gentlemen talk about stitching and carpets Well, just checked my car (70), it was a little dark... Upper dash pad stitching shows real stitch, in little slanted fashion as Jack explained. Pocket stitching seems a bit longer, always comparing straight sections. I'm rather sure these interior pads/pocket are original.

Now, if we get you wondering about fiber content of the stitching and whether it's S or Z twist fibers and what the fiber count is then you can start worrying. Ha, I knew my spinning / weaving / machine knitting hobby would come in handy with my corvette eventually. ~Juliet
