66 rear end

can somebody help with rear end dates my car was assembled 10-23-65 ,rear end says i-17-5 ,this seems a little early ?? also what is the difference in cases besides the side shaft caps in big block vs small block cases or ring and pinions

Your carrier case precedes your car's build by about 1 month. I'd say that's very normal and probably indicates an original.

If you are asking about the difference between small block and big block differential carrier cases for 1965, there was NO difference, at all, with respect to the case, itself. The stub axle yokes were the only difference.
