    Frame off 66

Does anyone know how long it takes to remove the body of a 66 coupe from the frame. I want to rebuild the drive train is this the best way to go.

    Jim,

Depends on your experience level and number of helpers.

We did this for my friend's 66 to replace the motor, rebuild suspension, etc. when he did not plan to repaint the car or replace the interior. It went well, as access was great. 3 of us did it on a Saturday afternoon.

Realize, though, that you'll be heading down that slippery slope. Once you see something that needs attention, you'll want to fix things "as long as you're there." Don't be surprised if LOTS of time and money are spent before you're done. It was over 6 months before my friend's body mated with his frame again.

Patrick is absolutely correct, in that once you have started, you will wind up with a much "better" car, just because of the accessability you have gained and the "now or never" decisions on brake lines, fuel lines and the like that simply cannot be accessed properly otherwise. When doing the unbolting, don't forget the seat belt cables. They will hang up the job for the unsuspecting.

        Patrick,

6 months?? Nice work. My car is still apart since last summer. I am hoping to have it on the road again by May.

To address the original question remember that lots of beer will attract helpers to your project. However the amount of beer consummed prior to starting the body off will slow the process down considerably.

          Chris,

He started with a running, driving car and didn't pull the body until the new engine was ready to install. Given the low mileage, the trans and rear diff didn't get rebuilt. That saved a lot of time. Within a week it was apart and sandblasted, then painted a week later and some of the suspension reinstalled.

I wish I had the free time he does.

I used Noland Adam's body lift book. It has a checklist and step by step instructions. The body lift went very quickly and without any problems. Getting everything clean, painted and back together is another problem. It just takes time to detail. I highly recommend the book.

It takes me about 6-8 hours nowdays and I have done a few. This time can change dramatically if things are rusty however.
