My 71 canister is vented on the bottom.

The canisters sometimes have a bottom that is removeable and then look as you described yours. If you need the bottom on your 71 I do not know.

        Bob,
If you don't mind, email me at moorej@bswllp.com and I will send you some pictures of the bottom of my canister to verify if like yours. Thanks.

          John,

They are "closed", but the bottom piece can easily fall off, especially if anyone ever tried replacing that filter in there like they were supposed to.

The piece you are missing is shaped like a funnel, and then has a short piece of hose attached to it. Whether it is supposed to act like a drain for the unit or allow ambient air in I'm not sure.

I've got one of these off my car right now. If you need a picture of the piece, let me know and I'll try to find it, shoot it, and send it to you.
