    New info. on 1963 327 / 340 Harmonic Balancer

Upon further review, the crankshaft in this rebuilt engine is not drilled to accept the bolt that is designed to tie down the harmonic balancer. The original crank was already ground too much and was replaced. Can this crank be drilled to accept the bolt? Does the crank need to come out in order to do this?
Would a smaller, pressed on balancer from a 250 / 300 work as well? Thanks again for all the help.

The crank can be drilled to accept the bolt, but I don't think that it can be done with the crank installed in the engine. This would need to be done on a drill press or a Bridgeport machine.

As far as the balancer goes, if you're not concerned about exact originality, you can obtain a replacement balancer for your engine from GM. The balancer is available under the original part number of GM #3817173. This balancer currently GM lists for $88.83 or about $65 from a competitive GM dealer. It is similar to the original except that it does not have the reinforcing ribs ("fins") on the reverse side of the balancer hub. This would be a far better choice than using a 250 or 300 hp balancer.

Peter - you can also get a high quality reproduction balancer from Goat Hill Classics that does have the vanes as original. I got mine at one of the shows, Bloomington or Carlisle, but you can get them from him anytime, although I saw some problems with folks getting responses from him recently. I am not at home, but I have a card with the contact info when I return if nobody else chimes in with the contact info....I think that his show price now is around $300....Craig
