The judging manuel says all small block heads are cast 3782461 I believe I am correct when I say 194 valves were in 300 hp engines and 202's were in 350,365 and 375 hp engines. If I am correct how do you tell just from head marking not engine marking what you have.

Re: 1965 "327 Heads Valve Identification"
You take them off, turn them upside down and look at the valves. If they seem to almost overlap then you have 2.02's. If there is an obvious space then you have 1.94's. The latter are probably better for torque and street driving. The 2.02's will flow more air at the higher rpm. The casting is the same. You can make 2.02's out of 1.94's. Probably not worth the trouble and expense. Personal choice.- Top

Re: 1965 "327 Heads Valve Identification"
Lower rated engines had heads with a casting mark on the front of the head that resembled a rectangle with a triangle on top. Higher HP heads had the famous "double hump" heads with two rounded (not squared off, rounded) humps side by side. However, 63 and earlier double hump heads used the early "fuelie" valves, i.e., 1.94 intakes. Pull the valve cover and check the casting date, if the head is cast in late 63, 64, or 65, and it is a double hump, then it more than likely has 2.02 intakes.- Top

Re: 1965 "327 Heads Valve Identification"
All the 327/300s used the big port "double hump" heads, but the OEM valve sizes were always 1.94"/1.50". The '62 and '63 SHP and FI engines used the same valve sizes but SHP (350 and 365 HP) and FI valve sizes increased to 2.02"/1.60" in '64.

Duke and Mike-----
Yes, the "double hump" casting mark heads were used for 1962-63 340/360 hp engines and 300 hp and greater 64-65 Corvette engines. However, all 62-63 "double humps" were 1.94/1.50. For 64+, the "double humps" were used for both the 1.94/1.50 and the 2.02/1.60 valve size.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1965 "327 Heads Valve Identification"
Mike - As I said in the previous post, all 327/300s (all years) used the 1.94/1.50 valve sizes. Prior to '64 SHP/FI heads used the same valve sizes, but the exhaust valve was a different part number and flagged with the note: "Silichrome #1 tip".. It was a bit more durable.
A post'64 461 with 1.94/1.50" valves would indicate it came off a 300 HP engine, because the '64 and up SHP/FI heads used the larger valves.
