I see T-10 Tranmissions advertised as 63 vette trannys. I am looking for one for a first month production 63 fuelie. Are the early 63 T-10s unique to the vette? Please provide what I should look for to identify an early close ratio T-10 for a first month production 63 vette to make sure I'm buying the right tranny?

Re: 63 Trans Identification
all '63 T-10 transmissions used the T-10 1D identification on the case. That corresponded to the use of a smaller than previously used front bearing, and the corresponding smaller front bearing retainer which has to be mated to the '63-only '421 bellhousing. The side cover and the tail are dated via casting dates. As to the gearing, put it in first and follow the number of rotations of the input that are required to get one full rotation of the output shaft. A close ratio is just over two turns, about 2 1/4, a wide is slightly more than 2 1/2 turns of the input required for one rotation of the output.- Top

Pat------
They were not exclusive to Corvettes and were used on other Chevrolets as well. Vaguely, I recall that the unit used with 63 full size Chevrolets with 409 may have had some differences, though. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 63 Trans Identification
409 used a front bearing retainer from a 3-speed as the 409 block was not fitted for a block mount starter and thus couldn't use the '421 bellhousing. The '09 used the same Bellhousing as the '61-2 Corvette, and the 3-speed pearing retainer combined the correct combination of small diameter bearing and bolt circle with the larget flange diameter needed for the earlier bellhousing.- Top
