    fuel pump rebuild

I have a NOS AC fuel pump of the 4656/7 family which had dried out rubber parts in it. I replaced the diaphram and the pulsator gasket. The check valves looked ok, so I left them alone. (besides which, I don't have any spare ones anyway) On the bench, the pump will instantly pump up about 5 psi, but it will gradually bleed off to 0.(in 10 sec or so) The other pumps I have lying around will all pump up and hold the pressure indefinately. I am assuming that one or both of the check valves is not holding. In operation would this really make any difference? I also wonder if the valves might hold after they have been emmersed in gas for a bit. This pump has been siting on the shelf for a long time. The rubber parts in the check valves do not appear to be dried out like the main diaphram was. Even though it was separated, the old diaphram worked. It just looked so ratty taht I didn't want to take a chance on it. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. I want to install this pump on my 62 FI so I can use the factory hard line to the fuel filter. I currently have part of a hard line with a rubber hose connection at the bottom to mate to the replacement pump. It works, but it worries me. I don't like rubber lines on the pressure side of the pump.

    Ed,
The chance your taking with the rubber section of fuel line vs the chance that a repaired fuel pump will hold pressure IMHO is a no brainer! One may let you down on the highway, the other a tendency to start a (good) gas fire! I think the 5 second bleed down time will probably increase as the seals see more gasoline. I would take this chance! Regards,

Ed, why not sent the pump out to a qualified rebuilder who has the proper valves? I've done it in the past and you can get 10 day turnaround.

I guess doing it myself is part of the fun. I actually have another set of valves, but I'll have to remove them from a pump that is not as cosmetically correct as this one. I bought the "parts pump" for far less than the cost of a rebuild kit, but I have to "harvest" the parts without damaging them.

Been there myself, but a fuel pump is one thing that can leave you "FORD" as in Found On The Road Dead!

            Ed,

Having just gone through the fuel pump fiasco I can tell you that harvesting the check valves is very easy. Just get a socket the same size as the valves, place them on the valves and give 'em a gentle tap with a hammer. They come right out. You can reinstall the same way.

Already done it and reassembled the pump. Used the socket, just as you suggest. Still will leak a bit from one chamber to the next. Don't know if it's the check valves or the pulsator diaphram.
Bill, A fuel pump has already left me FORD once; that's why I'm reluctant to install this one. I really can't imagine that a bit of by-pass would actually make any difference, but ????????????
