    Door Jam Finish

I have read the 1967 judging manual several times and I am struggling on what I need to tell my painter to do with the door jams. I have seen original cars and the paint is dull but the rest of the car is fairly dull from the years of weather. I have told him that the door jams are not rubbed out. Could someone tell me what the procedure should be. Once the color is sprayed does it get wet sanded? Where does the buffing stop? I would really appreciate a detailed description (better than the judging manual) of what needs to be done. It is a pretty visible area and needs to be correct. Thanks as always.

    Re: Door Jam Finish

At the factory the door jambs were painted with the same lacqure at the same time as the exterior . the car was then baked to flow the paint out a little and dry it .the exterior was buffed and sanded as needed . the factory spent very little time buffing (20 min.) .the door jambs were smooth and should have an un buffed semi gloss finish.runs were very common and so were bubbles .on 56 through 67 the body seams should show and in most cases there should be some grinder marks from seam finishing.the flateners used by many people to hide base/clear paint jobs are not even close & should be a full deduct .also be aware of tape lines in the jambs on the qt and front fender areas.the factory didnt mask anything .jambs can tell alot of stories to a good exterior judge.

PPG has just come out with a new satin clear coat for such applications. I have not tried it, but it may work.
