    1963 Powerglide

I am trying to find a powerglide transmission for my 63 corvette. It is my understanding that chevrolet made several different versions of the aluminium powerglide. Different legnth, different tail shaft, different number of clutch plates. Any help would be appreciated.

    Bob,
Corvette PG's have shifter mounting holes on the tailshaft.
63 requires course spline yoke (B-W T10), 64 and up use fine
spline yoke (Muncie). Paragon Reproductions sells them for
$2200-$2500 without converter or shifter. I have a 63 PG
available which has been reuilt and restored, including rebuilt
converter and shifter. Contact off-line or call (H) 248-693-2841
    (W) 734-779-5125.

The 63-64 powerglide is the same except Maybe in latter production 64 they might have went with a fine spline. Neutral saftey switch is 63-64 only and the one with backup light's is different than the one without. I have a complete unit forsale.1-260-672-8829

        Re: 1963 Powerglide

        Bob,
*I had the same problem you are having, only with my 1962. My original powerglide was long gone when I bought the car and replaced with a later 1965 Chevrolet unit. I could find no one to help me positively identify the original so I did a lot of talking and searching. I have several pieces of information that I have found, including a GM Aluminum-Case Powerglide Training Program Booklet TP-21, dated April 1962. Maybe I can help you.
*The Aluminum Case 2-speed Powerglide was introduced in 1962. There were three different versions of, or applications for, this transmission. 1) Application for the full size car, which is liquid-cooled through fluid lines running to an external cooler in the radiator. 2) Application for the Corvette, which is air-cooled relying ONLY on air flow across the external surface of the case for cooling. 3) Application for the Chevy II, which is also air-cooled but has two 2 3/4" diameter holes cut on each side of the bellhousing (total 4) for air to circulate inside the case, flow through a shroud on the converter, and exit through a vented underpan assembly converter cover.
*The Corvette powerglide main case assembly is the same as used for the full size car, and both have the same clutch plate stacks. The full size application can be converted to air-cooled by plugging the fluid line outlet and inlet ports plus a simple internal modification, or by connecting the outlet & inlet fluid ports with a short by-pass tube for fluid circulation.
*The Chevy II application has a lighter clutch plate stack for the L6 and a still lighter one for the L4. This Powerglide will not stand up under Corvette use, so avoid it.

        Corvette application identification:
*No 2 3/4" diam. holes cut in bellhousing.
*Will have fluid cooling line ports drilled, tapped, and plugged. Plugs that I have seen are hex head with untrimmed head and head marks "F-C" for early 1962 and "L" with an "underline" for the rest and into 1963 production.
*There are four machine lugs on the main case, one on each corner. 1962 will have the left rear lug cut off. 1963 will have all four lugs intact. It is possible that early 1963 could have carry-overs from 1962, but I don't know.
*On the left side of the main case there are two "clock faces". In the forward one is a part number. In the rear one should be a casting date consisting of the last two numbers of the year surrounded by hash marks that some believe to indicate the month by number of marks. I agree, until someone can prove
        otherwise.
*The assembly date for 1963 will be found on the bottom center of the fluid pan, and will consist of the Assembly Plant represented by "B" for Toledo (figure that one out!), followed by one or two numbers representing Month, followed by one or two numbers representing Day, followed by "N" or "D" representing Night or Day shift. I don't know if this assembly date remained on the bottom of the pan throughout 1963 production or moved to the left side of the pan. You will have to ask the 1963 crowd.
*The forward pump, behind the converter, will have a casting date. Many of these have been replaced and will be dated later than the transmission.
*Tail shaft extension housing will also have "clock faces" on the left side.
One will have a part number. No date. Will also have provisions for floor-shift mounting.
*Corvette Planet Carrier output shaft measures 14 11/16" and regular Chevrolet measures 12 3/8" (shorter than Corvette). Chevy II also measures 14 11/16" but is not the same as Corvette. There are 16 splines on the output shaft of all applications.
*Put an ad in the DRIVELINE for 1963 powerglide owners with VINs 1,000 on either side of yours. Preferrably in front and close behind. See what they have, check dates, and go from there. If you want it correct as it came installed out of St. Louis (judging?), the dates will have to predate the build date of your car.
