    1961-62 Dated Wiper Motor....

For what it's worth, a friend of mine reported this morning that he met an elderly gentleman at a recent Carlisle swap meet who said He worked many years at TRICO. This gentleman stated that a random sample of the motors was pulled from the assembly line at various times during the week for testing and evaluation. Afterwards they were ink stamped with the date of the test. The vast majority of wiper motors were NOT date stamped.

Also, ocassionally an ink stamp, "PRESSURE TESTED", appeared on the plenum (doghouse) of some FI units. This too was record of that particular unit having been tested. The vast majority of FI units had no such stamp.

Dale. When judging at the Steamboat Springs National I witnessed a couple of `62 owners ink stamping (white?) their motors. I think the gentleman with the stamp was from California. This was done on set up day.

      The Gentleman From California

Alan Koosed, AKA Red Roadster, AKA Red Rooster, AKA Rooster, was the dude that started this incorrect fad and with the investment of an ink pad and stationery store rubber date stamper, made a bundle!

I'm sure Alan believed that ALL motors were dated and that he was providing a service.

I become somewhat upset when absolutes are arbitrarily defined and such as this eventually becomes part of the Technical Reference Manual and Judging Guide.

I'm currently well on the way to discrediting the appearance of frame stencils, shim marks and inspection paint marks in C1 production. These items appear to have been arbitrarily incorporated into our TRM & JGs as well.

      Dale.

        Frame Stencils

Dale, Are you saying that frame stencils were not visible due to blackout, or that frames were not stenciled? John

Not visible due to black-out. Chassis was delivered to the dealer as a totally black high gloss chassis.

            P.S.

If you want to win a prize then do it the way the TRM & JG says to do it!

Dale I am going to leave it visible since I want the points, I was just curious from a academic standpoint. My Stencil was fully visible on my frame, but that was after 40 years of wear. Even after 40 years, all my inspection marks on the front end were still covered by blackout except for the spindle marks. My driveshaft stencil was clearly visible but don't know if that was because the numbers were down when blacked out or it just wore away. John

                Re: Frame Stencils

I agree Dale the man that lived across the street from me until he died a few years ago owned the trucking co. that carried the frames from A.O.Smith across the river to st louis. when he was looking at all the cute little marks on my frame he said he remembers a man walking out to his truck and stenciling the bottom frame with a date.I think he said they stacked them about 6 high but im guessing there. he also said they cheated they could double up on the amount of frames that the truck should carry at one time because it was so close.so in that case only one out of every 6 or 12 was stenciled ???? That's a disturbing bit of information Bill. I always thought the stencil was painted over with black-out and all the frames were stenciled.

Dale I dont know what year it would have been or how often it happened but he seemed real clear telling me about it.think about it .A.O.Smith made all kinds of frames. and at the st louis plant they built Corvettes, trucks, and full size chevys all at the same place (at least the plants were on the same property) it would make sense to have a part # on them , when i was a kid we would get stopped by trains that had car after car of frames stacked on them going somewhere i guess i should have paid attention.those frames didnt have any parts on them ,do you think they would have resprayed after assembly ? Ill have to ask around.the A.O.Smith plant was only about 10 miles from were I live, maybe I can find someone who will remember ?

                      Re: Frame Stencils

I have a very late 1962 340 Hp Corvette in my collection and it's a Survivor-Bowtie candidate. I looked very carefully for a frame stencil and haven't been able to find one.

This car has a lot of chassis black-out on it and has been up on blocks since 1969.
