1972 454 REBUILD HI PO OR STOCK

I HAVE A 1972 CORVETTE 454 AND WAS THINKING OF REBUILDING THE ENGINE. I WAS GOING TO PUT 9.5 TO 1 COMPRESSION PISTONS AND ONE STEP HIGHER CAM IT IN AND KEEP THE REST ALL ORGINAL. IT IS TOTALLY ALL ORGINAL RIGHT NOW. DO YOU THINK THIS WOULD DECREASE THE VALUE OR NOT? SHOULD I KEEP IT ALL ORGINAL? I FIGURED IF I WAS GOING TO REBUILD IT I WOULD GIVE IT SOME MORE PEP. THANKS ERIC

    Eric -

You will get lots of opinions on this. My two cents is to either leave it stock or build a "silouette" 70 LS-5 motor. I have had good luck with both approaches and built several in those configurations. I generally do not use 10.25-1 LS-5 pistons though -- I fly-cut mine to 9.75-1 and she runs great but kept everything else stock.

You will spend a bunch to rebuild a big-block and there is much to consider when changing out components for optimal performance. GM generally built a pretty solid motor and spent a lot of time engineering them. Go with the General is my general advice unless you have a particular reason to change.

As far as value is concerned, most people will not know the difference and what is in the motor is not as important as whether it performs to spec for a PV judge. If you put too much cam in it, you will probably take a deduction on the idle quality and/or emissions of the motor. If you are just driving the car, it probably wouldn't affect value in either direction.

    My two cents.
