    1982 Cross Fire Questions

    HELP HELP:

I have a 82 Coupe with 18,000 miles. I have the typical idle woe's. I took it to chevy and they feel it is a intake manifold leak, I.e. replace the gasket with a plenium gasket replacement as well. They are no other sensor issues. They also want to replace the 02 sensor with the plugs. The plugs are original. The car runs good at cold start but when warm idles rough. The tech feels that the intake gasket has retreated into the manifold? I love the car, However I don't want to spend $1175.00 for nothing! And then have the same problem!!! I would like some opinion's. I do feel the mechanic is very good at what he does!!

If it had much of a vacuum leak, it would not run well cold either. Most idle problems with cross fires are due to the idle air control solinoids and or the balance of the system. You should check to see if the welded lock is still intact on the linkage between the TB units. If it has been cut off, then Bubba has probably been lurking somewhere near. If it has been cutt off and readjusted, the balance proceedure needs to be performed first. That is after a thorough tuneup. If they are infact the original plugs, you should replace them, and all the other related tune up items. This unit uses two idle air controls which sometimes stick and or do not seat properly. This is especially true with limited use. You should check the operation of these.

The TBI units were drilled in 1992, with the plenum gasket replaced then. it seem to fine until I bought it. The tech feels that they TBI' are fine???

You should also check the EGR for proper operation. Cars that sit around as much as that one obviously has, will need these things. Any of these things, balance, IAC`s, or EGR`s will cause the symptoms of a vacuum leak, because thats essentially what they are.

Steve, Check throttle postion sensor, it sounds like it went bad to me. Car will run good cold because you are in "open loop". Check it out. Good Luck, Save the Wave.>George
