Steering arm on a 68 (tie rod rubbing tire cont'd)

After replacing my left steering arm, the tie rod connected to the steering arm rubs the inside of the front tire. I believe I got the right steering arm (part 3928651) but now I'm trying to determine if the used one I purchased is bent.

If anyone has one off their car that they could measure it would be greatly appreciated. I've posted a picture showing how I've taken the measurement which was 2.13" from the center of the first tie rod hole (quick turn hole) to a straight edge running from the spindle mounting bolt holes on the steering arm. I know this is not very scientific but if anyone has a better idea I'm glad to try it.

One other thought is that I did not have this problem running 225/70/15s on 8" rims. As part of my restoration I've put on correct 7" wheels (it's a 68) which causes the 225s to bulge slightly more over the rims than the 8"s. But unless I have my measurements backwards the difference in offsets between the 7" and 8"s should counter the tire bulge.

I guess the last possibility is that my hub/spindle assembly is bent (ie torqued to the rear between the ball joints).

This is a real headscratcher, thanks for any help.

I've never tried to post a picture before but my link didn't work. Until I figure this thing out if you cut and paste my URL into your browser it seems to work.

You must either have a bent steering arm or the knuckle is twisted out of spec.
I have seven inch Rallys with 225/70VR-15s on my SWC and the steering arm/tie rod end has about 0.5" clearance to the wheel/tire.

That must be it, because the right side is fine. Does any one know if the right and left side steering arms are identical mirror images, because my problem one bends inboard 3/4" less than the right one?

They should be mirror images of each other. Sounds like something is bent....

            Jim,

I measured the steering arm on my 1969 as you described and got 2.70 inches.

Much apreciated mine is definitely bent, that 1/2 inch will keep it off my tire.
