    C1 - Paint Stripping

I got the Eckler's Corvette Fiberglass Repair book last week (through the NCRS of course) and it seems like a great book to get me started on DYI repairs and someday the whole ball of wax (at least in the prep department). My question is, the recommended paint stripper, Ditzler DX-525, is no longer available (from the phonecalls I've been making); what is the preferred stripper that some of you have had success with??? Ecklers sells a product that travels via UOS ground, but I was hoping to get something local.
    Thanks in advance!!! Jim :-)

      Jim,

I used BIX Spray-on Stripper - got it at my local Lowes store, I can't remember what it cost but I used 3 or 4 gallons of it to strip my car. It cleans up with water and is easy to use. The thing I liked most about it is that it removes the finish coat (and the underlying sealer coat) just fine but not the baked on primer coat. You'd have to apply extra coats to remove the primer but then you run the risk of getting the stripper into the raw fiberglass. I sanded the primer coat off of mine. Good luck.

        Hi Jim,

I used Kleen-Strip for fiberglass, and was very pleased with it. I brushed it on and it clung very well to the vertical surfaces. It did a great job on the many layers of white Imron, but didn't take off the red oxide primer.

I purchased it at my local auto paint supply shop.

We just stripped three coats of paint from a 1965(my wife did most of the work, her car). We used a single edge razor blade and removed the first layer. We then used Klean-Strip for "fiber glass" (must be for fiberglass)and used two gallons. The paint was removed to the original primer.

I second the opinion on bix spray on stripper. Not the fastest stripper I have ever used, but easiest to use. John
