    327 Lower Dipstick Tube ?

I just snaked out a 10 inch flanged hollow tube from the access hole for the upper dipstick tube. I am clueless as to the use of this lower tube and it's installation relative to the upper tube. Any info is always greatly appreciated.

Lower tubes were used in a number of Corvette pan applications to prevent dip stick from moving/rubbing against cam shaft.

How about "crankshaft" there, buddy? Cam is top side a few inches.
My 1965 327/300 has one of these lower tubes.

So, does it hurt the engine if it doesnt have a lower tube? ('67 327 L-79)

How do you install the tube--from the top or do you have to drop the oil pan?

        thanks! Brandon

Peter, no biggie. They came on all the engines I have ever torn down. They just drop or tap in from the top before the upper dipstick tube is pressed in. Just as simple as that. The gunk sometimes makes them hard to get out but they should go in without a hitch. No disasembly required if the upper tube is already out.

Yes, as others have indicated, the lower dipstick tube was used on all 1956-79 Corvette small block engines as well as most other Chevrolet small block engines. This tube is still available from GM under GM #3951600.
