I recently changed out my regular steering column on my 74 to a tilt-tele for my convience. However, two noticeable differances: 1st the shaft length from the firewall shield is 1/2 shorter on the tilt column and the electrical connection attatched to the lower column has more connections then the standard column. We managed to get the rag joint and spline attatched by cheating a little here and there, but why the differance? Why more spades and connectors as well ?? Thanks in advance Ray Greene

Re: changing to tilt-tele column
Don't think there should be a difference in the column electrical connector, unless there's been a swap-a-rooney. Connectors used on other Saginaw Steering columns with similar T/Tele 'innards' ARE different....
On the column being 'short'... Almost always when I see/hear this and folks backtrack, they find the donor column came from a wreck. Column is designed & intended to collapse during frontal impact (ball bearings inside outer wrapper allow internal shafts to move/collapse and absorb impact. The typical syndrome of a 'short' T/T column is add disassembly/repair labor to re-work and restore the overall length.
Also, different year Corvettes used different rag joint assemblies with some being specific to the column. But, my recollection is after '69 the rag joint is non-column specific....- Top

Re: changing to tilt-tele column
Thanks Jack, I purchased the column used from a gent in the "Driveline". I dont know if it was from a wreck or not, I never thought of that. On the electrical connectors, there is a differance of ignition switches offered, one for tilt, the other without.- Top
