    Pulley Alignment-C1

    I cannot seem to get my pulleys aligned ... The water pump pulley appears correct, and the balancer pulley seems correct. Any suggestions?

    There is a spacer behind the water pump pulley. This makes up the space added by the engine mount.

    Paragon has them for $2.50. Part # 846. 800-882-4688.

    Hope this helps.

      The spacer is not behind the water pump pulley, it's behind the Harmonic balance which brings the crankshaft pulley out 1/8".

        This is really a hub reinforcement device. But, if you've ever been on the road when a Corvette without one fractured the pulley, you'll understand why it's REAL smart to have it installed! Still available from Chevy too...

          Non Vette guys leave these out...

          often! The C1 engine mount misaligns the standard Chevy setup because is mounts between the block and the water pump. Rather than make a bunch of special, low production parts (remember the Vette was hardly paying its own way in the 50's) they simply put a spacer the thickness of the mount behind the crank damper, like a thick washer.

            Paul;
            I assume you are talking about the water pump and harmonic balancer pulleys and not your generator pulley. Andrew is correct, the spacer mounts on the crank behind the harmonic balancer. It is the same thickness as the motor mount. As I recall there is a reinforcement on my water pump pulley which is welded to the pulley. I guess it would be prudent to see you have both installed.

              Jack, Does the reinforcement...

              ...have to be welded or can it just mate to the pulley surface held by the attaching bolts? The vendors seem to be selling it as a separate part. Does the reinforcement mount on the inside or outside of the pulley? Seems like the inside makes more sense.

                No mystery....

                here. The AIM shows the assembly orientation (water pump hub, reiforcement, then pulley sandwiched together and held in place by fan bolts). Paragon's catalog shows a nice picture of the reinforcement plate (PR-846); just a simple stamped steel piece with rolled/rounded edges.
