Bolt head type on a '63

The part number of the bolt is 9418566. It is a 1/4-20 thread. The bolt is used with the support rod that goes from the headlight mounting area down to the radiator frame (used on both left and right headlight support rods). The bolt goes up through the bottom of the car body, through a reinforcement bracket (p/n 3830917), that is threaded (that's how I know it is a 1/4-20) and then attaches to the lower part of the support rod.

I do not have the bolt and so my question is: Can someone tell me how long it is and more importantly, the type of head it has?

    Thanks,

    Gary

    Good luck...

You have now entered the "Twilight Zone" of Corvette restoration. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wants to commit themselves to what the bolt headmarks even MIGHT have been. I can only guess there has been a lot of blood on the floor over this at shows. If you can't get a hint from Paragon, you will have to hit the 'Vette shows, and take your best guess. Most of the fasteners on my '55 are original, and I would be happy to report those original headmarks to anyone. I am apparently a minority of one.

      Gary------

GM #9418566 was a pan head, cross recess (phillips head) machine screw. It did, indeed, have 1/4-20 thread and was 5/8" long. It had a black phosphate finish.

This screw was discontinued in September, 1982 and replaced for SERVICE by GM #14010976. The latter screw is identical in configuration EXCEPT for the fact that it uses a Torx head and not cross-recess. It's still available from GM for a curent GM list of $1.00/each.

Another option would be to obtain screws GM #9434148. These screws have 1/4-20 thread, phosphate finish, cross-recess pan head, 29/32" thread length and are 1" long. Then, simply trim off 3/8" from the end. Presto---an original configuration screw! These screws are still available from GM for $1.02/each.
