On the corvette crossflags (1972) What is the symbol on the red flag (other than the chevy symbol) and what does it stand for? Thanks in advance

Its a Fleur de Lis. If I recall right, the original Corvette emblem had an American flag but was substituted for the Fleur de Lis/Chevy flag at the last minute. I think GM management felt the American flag was not appropriate. You may want to check the archives as I am sure there has been prior discussions on this and what the Fleur de Lis represents (aside from being on the uniforms of the Saints). Certainly it is French and has something to do with the fact that Chevrolet is a French name.- Top

Yes, there was a thread on this a few weeks ago. It is a Fleur de Lis as Mike said and it was originally to be a US flag. The change at the last minute by the GM styling employee, in NY, was done in his hotel room and he got the inspiration from the wallpaper in his room.
There is a desplay at the NCM with the emblem showing the US flag, thanks to John Amgwert.
