My '65 BB exhaust manifolds have approx. 10 years of rust and I would like to refinish them for the upcoming season. Looking for advice.

    Thanks.

i refinished my sb manifolds the following way and they lasted over 10 years with no rust. i first sand blasted them with a very fine grit. anything to remove the rust, you could wire wheel brush also i guess. I then used a phosforic (?) acid rust inhibited treatment called OSHPO. A lot of paint stores sell similiar stuff. I got mine from Echlers catalog. That turns what rust is down in the pits to phosforic oxide from iron oxide. I then sprayed them with VHT very high temp clear. This clear needs high temperature to cure it. The regular VHT clear will burn off the manifold under running conditions. I found this coating to last with no rust bloom. Hope this is of help. ken

      Ken-

How does the finish on the manifolds look w. regards to gloss? I thought that the VHT clear only came in a glossy finish. Please correct me if I'm wrong, and let me know the best brand and place to get the VHT clear. Thanks.

I refinished my 66 SB manifolds with Eckler's High Temp manifold paint. It has lasted four years now with out any rusting. It "resembles" cast iron. I say that because anyone can look at this and see that they have been painted. There may be better products out there that look like natural cast iron but do they last long? I don't know. I will do this again if the need arises unless I find something better.

I bought it at a auto parts house in Highland, Ind. I would think any good race parts auto store would handle it. It was not glossy. Not sure if I got semigloss or flat or what. i will have to dig up the can and see. The actual finish looks like uncoated iron. I Duntov and BG the car and had no problem, only compliments. It does not look like it is painted at all. The cast blast, other coatings can be spotted very easily. I also did my exhaust pipes with the VHT , but not the high temp. stuff. That way I didn't have to cure it to keep it from being sticky if pipes didn't get too hot. It lasted almost 10 years before rust bloom started under it. Ken

Gary, I ran into a guy at regional in Cypress selling a phosphate plating in a bottle. It looks just like raw cast iron. He claimed it takes the exhaust heat. Also his sample was 3 years old and didn't have any rust. I purchased a bottle. My results looked great but they rusted shortly after. You may have better luck. One thing I did have luck with is high temp silver paint followed by lite coats of the high temp cast spray. Yes it looks like cast spray but has lasted on a trailer queen for over 10 years.
