I've got a 1962 aluminum air cleaner lid that has scratches covering its entire top surface because of cleaning with coarse or medium steel wool. I want to polish the scratches out, but not so much so that it shines. I want to end up with a clean dull aluminum looking surface.
I figured I'd rub it some more with increasingly finer grades of steel wool. Will that take all the scratches out? How about very very fine (200 to 2000) wet sandpaper? How about rubbing compound? How about glaze? This is now starting to sound like polishing paint to a high degree of shine. I don't have a buffing wheel.
