I am having trouble finding a shop to zinc plate my brake backing plates and caliper brackets. All the places I have contacted do not zink plate, only chrome. I did find one place in Washington that would cadmium plate them for almost $800. That's way to much. I live south of Chicago, you would think I could find a place. Does anybody have any sugestions? Thanks

Re: Zinc plating
Mike------
Zinc plating is probably the most common of all industrial plating finishes in use today. We have several plating shops in our city (I've been responsible for regulating them with respect to water pollution control issues for years). I'd say that about 70% of their work is zinc and the majority of the rest nickel.
What you need to do is find a job shop electroplater NOT a decorative shop. Decorative shops do primarily chrome and usually don't know much else. Job shop electroplaters primarily service the manufacturing industry. However, they will usually do small orders for individual customers, too. The only problem is that most of these job shops will have a MINIMUM charge. So, if you take them just a few parts, you'll have to pay the minimum charge which is usually in the $100 to 200 range which makes your cost PER PIECE very high if you only have a few pieces. The secret is to assemble a larger order of many pieces (either all of your own or shared with others) and then have the whole batch plated. Usually, the minimum charge will cover just about everything that you'll be taking them and then some.
The shop that John suggested may be a job shop type operation and, thus, exactly what you're looking for.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Zinc plating
Brakeboosters.com does that type of work plus rebuilds boosters. They have some pictures and pricing on the web site and I believe they charge $65 for that part. You might try them. I have seen some of thier work on other cars and others I know have been thrilled with the work they do. I am going to send them a box of smog parts et al to be plated later this week.

Re: Zinc plating/get an Eastwood plating kit!
Bob,
from other discussions on the subject, People are saying there is a learning curve associated with the Eastwood kit(and others) and capacity issues.
If I were going to do a lot of parts and had the time-money-patients, I would by all means buy a Caswell Plating setup. They seem to be good kits for the money. I personaly would need some better justification to go that route at this time as I only have a small box of stuff to plate and other cars to fix.

Re: Zinc plating
I had mine done by Steve Gregori in Sanger, CA. He is an NCRS member and advertises in Driveline as well as Hemmings. He is very reasonable and does fantastic work. He also rebuilds b/boosters and does phosphate coating.

Re: Zinc plating/get an Eastwood plating kit!
I opted for the Caswell Plating Kit. It seems to have a larger capacity than the Eastwood but costs almost twice as much. While I haven't used the system yet, the inch thick manual alone seems worth the price. It's been a real education.
