    Leaky carbs

I sure could use some help/advise from guys who have been there/done that.

Took my car [BB w/3x2's] in because of gas leaking from carbs. Man says carbs are warped and need to be fixed. Options he gave me; 1. he rebuilds carbs [$500 to $600 if no unforseen parts needed]. 2. new carbs from Holly [$1200.00] He says under option 1 that it is a good chance that fuel inlet on bowl is pitted and that means new bowls would be needed. Are there any other options that would keep my car correct? What options are there besides these?

TIA Roger Coen, NCRS yes, #?

Your "man" is ripping you off. New carbs from chicago corvette supply are $935.00 for all three. Are the carbs original, correct dates, etc and if so are you interested in maintaining originality? If the answer is yes I would send them to Bob Kunz for restoration(can get you # if needed). I believe it costs around $5-600.00 for all three for complete restoration to NCRS specs. There are others who also do this work, but w/ varying quality. The tripower carbs are somewhat tricky and are very sensitive to base plate warpage which is often the result of over tightening. The nuts should be torqued to a liitle more tan hand tight. If warped they can be machined. Also checked the manifold and machine if necessary. Good luck.

Back off spending all that loot boy. I was the proud owner of a 1967 427-400 HP tri-power with electronic distributor. There are two (2) problems that can be fixed by you. First, check the four mounting screws, that hold the float bowl to each carb, for being loose, if there tight, go buy yourself a new cork gasket for each bowl and replace them. I recommend that you tighten each bowl every couple of months. You would be surprised how quickly they work loose. Don't over tighten, just snug (the gaskets last longer). Second, check the float setting, remove the sight screw plug (located on the side of the bowl with engine running), no fuel should run out, if it does, your float is set too high. Adjustment is easy (once you get the hang of it) by the screw and nut on top of the bowl. If you buy full kits (one for each carb) and if your a do it your selfer and half way good at it, these carbs are easy to rebuild and maintain. Oh one other thing, when you tighten up the fuel bowls, you will notice a change in engine idle, you may have to make an adjustment. If you have problems, I'll be glad to help you all I can. You have my e-mail drop a line. There are very good books out there that can help also. Good Luck Ray

Hi Roger: I paid Holley $650.00 to restore my two barrels and they came back leaking and did for two years , tried every fix known to mankind, regasket, retorque, sealant etc, nothing worked. I met Jerry Luck at Carlisle, he restored my carbs, line bored all the shafts, decked all the flat surfaces and replated all parts to NCRS specs. They looked perfect, started on the first spin, choke worked properly, all I had to set were the idle jets to accomidate my motor they are leak free and cost half of what Holley charged. If you have incorrect dated throttle bodies he will give you the correct dated bodies for an extra $75.00 each. excellent work, outstanding,
