            A/C site

It will tell you a lot about A/C in general. I switched my 67 to R134 three years ago and am NOT sorry.

                Don,
Check out eBay. Just looked over there and the is one auction for two 12 oz cans that closes about 4:55 pm pst and the price is currently $31.00. They have another closing today with 4 12oz cans and price is currently $80.00. And another that closes tomorrow with 4 cans currently at $31.00.

Just do a search for "R-12"

                    Tom------

I haven't browsed any of the eBay R-12 sales lately, but, in the past, I've noted that most, if not all, of the sellers specify that they will only sell to folks that can show proof of certification. How well this is enforced, I don't know. However, it is illegal under federal law to transfer R-12 to anyone not certified, and I'm sure that this is what prompts the certification requirement in the item description.

Years ago, of course, anyone could purchase R-12. Then, the USEPA made it a requirement that you had to be certified to purchase it. However, and incredibly, the initial requirement only applied to the 16 oz cans. So, you had to be certified to purchase the small cans, but anyone could purchase the 30 pound containers. The local "Auto Parts Club" store had pallets of cases of the 16 oz cans for sale before the 16 oz can certification requirement went into effect. Then, after the certification requirement went into effect for the 16 oz cans, these disappeared and pallets full of the 30 pound containers appeared for sale. This went on for a few years before the USEPA closed the "loophole" and made the sale of ANY size container of R-12 legally contingent upon certification of the purchaser.

                        Joe,
I think that is also an eBay requirement for R-12 auctions. But you can get the EPA certif on-line for about $20. Take an on-line, open book test and pass, pay the fee, and they mail your EPA certification to you. This may be a good idea for all of us as it appears that there is a movement afoot to require certification to purchase ANY refregrant including 134a.

Listening to a radio car talk show a week or so ago I was surprised to hear that him say that the changing a R12 system to R134 does not require all the changing of seals. If I remember correctly all that is needed is to remove R12 and install the R134 connections, specified R134 oil, and recharge the system with R134. If I remember correctly, he said that the R12 oil would settle to the bottom on one of the components of the air conditioning system and would not have any affect on the operation of the system with R134. Anyone tried this?
