69 Door Panels

Is it necessary to punch through the plastic backing in Al Knoch's repro '69 door panels to get the DOOR PULL to fit properly? Or? Thanks.

The screws holding the door pull go through the door panel and thread into the inner door structure so you are not pulling on the door panel when you close the doors. They are kinda tricky to get lined up but that is how they attach.
