What are the differences (if any) between current repro tips and originals? Some current catalogs advertise the seam and the part number are on the part, and they are stainless. Were originals mild steel, and then chromed? Are originals made of thicker material than repros?

Orignal '66 exhaust tips were stainless
Everett,
My 66 JG says the originals were stainless, not chrome-plated carbon steel. I don't know how well the current repros compare with originals in terms of metal gage, etc., but I do know that one can buy repros w/ and w/o the seam and w/ and w/o the part number, so the ones w/o these features are obviously going to get a higher deduct during judging.

The part number issue is the subject of some discussion, I have originals I took off cars 20 years ago w/o part numbers, other say they have the same items with the P/n. Some things for sure, the seam is at the very bottom of the originals, and they are a very thin stainless steel.- Top
