    65 327/350 heads HT Continues

I have pulled the heads and took them to machine shop and he thinks it was the head gasket but will flux and checkfor cracks. I took both down and now I have questions on gasket.
The head gasket was a older thin metal gasket I have seen different opinions on gasket types and would like some feedback on what would be reliable and long lasting.
If I had leakage of rad. fluid into the cylinders does that meen engine block will need to be reworked/ rings?
My last question in the top of the valve covers was a "gel" like substance that was on both sides. Someone mentioned antifreeze and oil mixed makes this gel I did just change my oil and did not notice any antifreeze any ideas much appreciated thanks to all

In the past I've seen posts recommending Fel-Pro "Perma Torque" composition gaskets.

        Wayne and Jimmy------

They're always my choice. For your engine, the Fel-Pro number is 1003. They're not inexpensive, though----about 40 bucks/each from discount sources and they're packaged in a quantity of ONE.

Stock, shim type gaskets will seal very well BUT the block and head surface must be absolutely true and flat.

            Felpro gasket points deduction

If you go with the Felpro blue gaskets a points deduction will be made as there is a vast difference from the original stamped steel. The original stamped steel will yeild a slightly higher cylinder compression.

                Felpro gasket points deduction

                Gene,

What sort of deduction is typical? One or two points?

                    Re: Felpro gasket points deduction

This is another area where I choose to "take the hit" and use the Fel-Pro composition gaskets; anyone who decides to use the "correct" steel shim gaskets on old block and head surfaces and risks critical sealing failure for the sake of a couple of points needs to re-assess their goals and whether they really want to drive their car. Of course, that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong The Fel-Pros will also reduce compression about half a point, which is not a bad thing with today's fuels.

                        Jimmy:

Take the points deduction and install the Felpro Perma-torque head gaskets. I have used them forever and they always are solid, great performing gaskets. Copper and Steel gaskets are fine from the factory. But there is almost always some minor warpage in the head or block after running the motor. Its not enough to normally blow a gasket but if you try to install one again, it may be enough for it not to seal well enough.

                        My 2 cents.

                            Joe,

These gaskets are a little cheaper through Summit at $29, but for a total of $90 I went ahead and bought the whole Performance Kit from Fel-Pro (again through Summit) which includes TWO head gaskets as well as a wide assortment of the rest you'll need anyway.
