I have a set of repro 775:15 red line tires that were on my 1967 when I bought it. They are Firestone Deluxe Champions. The judging guide says that the correct 1967 Firestone red line tire should be Firestone Super Sports. Would this be a big judging point deduction ? Thanks Jim Carmain #37003.

Re: Reproduction Red Line tires
Jim:
I remember that the replacement tires must be of the same construction (2 ply nylon) as original, and the Deluxe Champs are not. I also recall that the tires must carry the same "brand" , which would be "Super Sports". These are no longer available. The only way to get the correct brand is to go with Goodyear Power Cushions, at a substantially higher price. By the way, the same applies to Goldlines also. Interestingly, the Power Cushions, even though they are 7.75x15, have a tread width approx. 1/2" wider than the Deluxe Champions (and the Silvertowns). The rep. at Goodyear told me that the red/goldline Power Cushions were a special line, made only for Corvettes. The same applies to the "Super Sports" brand.
To answer your question, I believe I remember the "hit" for improper "brand" would be very healthy, in the order of 50% or more. Maybe someone can look that up and give you an exact figure on that.

Re: Reproduction Red Line tires
Dean:
In the above post, I referred to optional tires available in 1965. The 1965 TIM&JG states that all tires are "two ply construction with four ply rating". I assume that the tire construction did not change between 1965 and 1967, and, additionally, in my conversations with Goodyear representatives, all statements blanketed Redline (1967),and Goldline (1965-66) tires in the same category.
If this is not correct, I would be very interested in learning the truth, as I do not own a 1967 TIM&JG.

67 tire plys
The TM says that "all tires are 2-ply construction with a 4-ply rating."
The Firestone Deluxe Champion was available for 67 as a WW or BW ,but not a redline tire.- Top

Brandon:
Yes, that sounds right. I believe that all tire configurations did not change between 1965 and 1967. The next sea change to occur with tire nomenclature occurred in, I think 1968 or 69 with the arrival of the "wide oval", or bias belted tires (e.g. F70-14, etc.).
Strange that Firestone no longer reproduces "true" goldline/redline tires, which were originally sold with the "Super Sports" brand. Many vintage tire houses try to pass off the currently marketed Firestone "Deluxe Champion", manufactured with a red or gold line as authentic, but, in fact, the Super Sport was constructed differently, and had wider tread width.
