In the latest issue of Vette Magazine, I noted with great sadness the passing in January of this year of Hans George Jonas. George was the founder and long-time owner of Stainless Steel Brake Corporation of Clarence, NY. I have learned a great deal about Corvette brake systems from many personal discussions that I've had with George. Also, I've learned a great deal from his various writings.

George (and also Ken Carter of Carter's Brakes in Livermore, CA) pioneered the stainless steel brake caliper repair method. In doing so, they solved one of the most serious problems which plagued the 65-82 Corvette braking system. This repair method allowed for a permanent repair of Corvette brake calipers as an alternative to the only method which previously existed-----replacement of the caliper half or halves. This was not only hugely expensive but was anything but permanent.

The "Corvette World" has lost one of the "greats" and I will sorely miss conversation with George. Thankfully, his legacy and talent will live on with the stainless steel braking systems which make 65-82 Corvette brakes so much more durable and safe. And, hopefully, his son Mike will carry on the business as one of the premier suppliers of Corvette brake parts and high quality stainless steel sleeved calipers.

I also knew George as an active member of the Ferrari Club of America; he loved the cars, and developed a number of special tools for Ferrari maintenance which he had SSBC manufacture and market to FCA members at less than the cost to make them. A brilliant engineer and a gentleman; we'll miss him.
