I have a 70 cpe and it was missing the rear window storage tray. I purchased a used replacement with all the hardware. The handle seems to be correct according to the AIM but I don't see how it mounts on the tray. The tray has a circular hole about the size of a half dollar that looks to be a recepticle for some sort of latch. Any help out there?

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
Tony your 70's rear window storage tray does not have a handle attached to it. My 70 is a July built car and the handle to release the tray so that it would lower is attached to the car not the tray. The handle is pulled forward which allows the tray to lower.- Top

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
If your tray has a hole cut into it for a latch you have a tray for a 1972. That was the only year to opperate that way. Your tray is probably also of a plastic construction. The correct tray for your car should be made of a cardboard type material with latching opperation as previously described.- Top

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
Thanks Jim. Now I am really lost. The handle that I have is black painted over chrome that says "back window storage" with a spring steel piece attached by 2 phillips screws at the top and angles back at at about 120 degrees. From the AIM it appears that this catches on a clip mounted to the body under the rear window. The clip and the handle are 2 distinct pieces and I see no apparent way to attach them. As a matter of fact I see no way to attach the handle to the tray.- Top

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
I think you are right. I have a Jan 70 built Cpe a 72 tray and a 70 handle and they aren't compatible. The tray is of fibergalss construction with an aluminum strip on the leading edge. So much for buying used parts sight unseen. I will see if I can arrainge their return.- Top

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
Tony the handle you describe is what I have. The spring type piece of metal is attached to the body just below the rear window. There should be two holes and two diameter screws attach the spring piece.
The spring piece broke on mine many years ago. I went to Chevrolet and ordered what I thought would be a new spring metal piece. Thats not what I got. The piece I got was all that was available according the the parts person. The new piece is not made to attach the metal handle piece. I still have the handle and belive I have seen in one of the Corvette parts venders books that the spring metal piece is available.- Top

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
That is probably what I have,a broken spring metal piece. It is in 2 parts one with the handle attached by 2 screws and one that attaches to the underside of the window. I will look in the catalogs and see if I can find the spring steel clip. I know Dr Rebuild has the handle but I would rather just get the clip. If you find it in one of your catalogs please let me know.- Top

Re: 70 Rear window storage tray
Tony I may have seen the spring steel piece in Pargons catalog. Not sure though. I have their catalog in the garage I will attemp to find it. One thing about not having the rear storage tray installed, it sure has given more room to put luggage when traveling.- Top
