    Steering column

I thought my key cylinder was broken. I thought wrong. After I took the column apart to replace the cylinder I found the real problem.
You guys are smart, so you'll know what I'm talking about. The key cylinder turns the rod in the column, which turns a plastic ? gear on the left side, which in turn, moves a geared rod back and forth. Looks like it's made of pot metal.
Anyway, that is what is broken, the geared rod the goes back and forth. Seems you need this rod to start your car. Questions are,
Can I get this rod ? and what's it's technical name. ( and cost )
Can I fix this myself ? I've been working on cars all my life but have never dug that deep into a column.
Do I need anything special ?
If I can't do this myself, what should I expect to pay a pro ?
If this is really expensive, do you think the LS-5 would make a good
tow engine for my truck ?
All thoughts and help is greatly appreciated.
    Brad

Hello, I worked recently in my TT column so my memory is fresh. I think that you are refering to the Rack, which conects the plastic gear with the ignition switch rod. I have seen it in the catalogs (it looks like a big metal old key).

The part in question is the Rack. The large end fits over the Actuator Rod Pin that I believe connects down the shaft to the ignition switch. The plastic part is called the Sector Drive. This part also connect, via a spring, to the locking bolt. Those are the names, good luck on replacement parts. FYI - A Chassis Manual is worth the investment if you are doing the work yourself.
