    Engine Block Identify?

Am trying to identify an engine block #3896948 found in a 1959 Corvette. We know it's not original. Where does it really belong to? Please Help; the date is H196. Thanks in advance.

Stubby, According to the info that I have on hand, the casting number that you have is for a 283 block used in Chevrolet Chevelle and light truck models. Your casting date I indicates a month of June(H) with the date (19) of the year 66(6). This block will fit for your application, unfortunately it is incorrect for numbers use. Hope this helps, Eric

How does (H) get to be June? Thought eighth letter of alphabet was 8th month of year. Hence, 8=Aug. ?? JackNcrs#896

          Re; Date stamp on engine

Hello Jack, As I had stated, using the information that I have available, I put the engine fitment to the model and year that I had posted earlier. I have seen date codes use the letter H for June however, after re-checking, this is a transmission code application. Sorry for the month error as I went one page to far in my notes. Eric ncrs31337

Coming into this thread apparently way late. But, gotta watch alpha month codes! Some (like body build date and other key castings) follow the production MY (A=first month of production) while most others follow the calendar year (A=Jan). NCRS Judging Guides as well as other sources (Noland Adams) define which system applies to what....
