    Uh-oh! A '58-'62 measurement, please!

I suspect the guy who installed my front clip may have made a major screwup. The front of the hood is over a half inch high when I put it into it's lowest position (low enough so the radiator support is almost scraping the hood). Here's the measurement I'd like to verify: There are two steel plates attached to either side of the radiator support. The fresh air hose goes into one of them. How far is it from the very top edge of one of them straight up to the top edge of the fiberglass lip (that the hood goes over). Mine is 3/4". I have a bad feeling everybody else's is about an inch and a half. Thanks!

    Mike,

My '59 is also 3/4 inch for this measurement on both sides. Never been wrecked or had the front clip off.

        Mike,

Mine ('60) measures 3/4" also. The front clip is original but my radiator support is repro and now you got me worried if my hood is going to line up.

Mike, On my 60 the fiberglass lip touches the two steel plates that attached to either side of the radiator support, there is no space. I bought my 60 new and they have never been worked on. The two steel plates that attached to either side of the radiator supports or even with the top of the radiator support. Do you have a top tank radiator? Is there a dip about 1 1/2" wide by 1 1/2" deep all the way across your hood at the point where the radiator support is? I would look at the hood to see if it is the right one.

                Hmmmmmm . . .

First, thanks for the responses. Second, . . . . . . heck, I don't know what's second!!! I gotta totally rethink this! Andrew's thought makes sense, but I just measured the hood and compared it with the original (I have two hoods) and it's perfect. The holes for attaching to the radiator support on both the inner fender AND those steel plates all put the hood too high. Arghhhhhh! When I figure it out, I'll let you know! Thanks!

                    One more measurement, please

On the top front of the radiator support, there is the long bar that connects the left side to the right side. When the radiator support (RS) is installed, this is the highest part of the RS and is towards the front of the car. The two side plates bolt to the side lips of the RS and are towards the rear of the car. I just want to confirm that, first. I can't assume anything anymore!

Now, if I continue in a straight line along the top edge of that front long bar, I wind up a little less than half an inch higher than the corner rim of the fender (where it makes the gap with the hood). And I would be a little over an inch higher than the top edge of the lip the hood goes over. Is this about the same for you guys?

Incidently, I tried my other (believed original) hood and it also sits high. Believe me, next time I'm not buying a cheap front clip!

If I continue in a straight line along the top edge of that front long bar, I wind up even with the top edge of the lip the hood goes over. You know the RS does not start in the first hole on the side plates. The first bolt is in the second hole down on the side plates.

                            Ah, ha!

Thanks, Andrew. That would explain how your hood fits and mind doesn't. But those side plates on my car have three holes each that line up perfectly with three radiator support holes if I start at the first hole. The car has had front end repairs before, so possibly they drilled new holes. If I start at the second hole, then I'll only get one bolt in per side. Is that right?
