    '60 Heater Question

It appears St. Louis smeared black tar around the periphery of the engine compartment side of the heater. What were they trying to accomplish? How can I duplicate this operation? Tar would be too thick and paint would be too thin.

I think they used some non hardning sealer as a gasket, which may have taken on a tar like appearance with time. Could be someone added some sort of sealer at a later date. I have not observed this in any of the C1'S I have owned, but I hace seen some sealer around the firewalls that sort of looked like tar. I think it was just old sealer. Someone more expert in details may have a better notion.

I may be mistaken and quite often have been, but I always just assumed that the gummy substance was nothing but the foam rubber gasket where it had deteriorated from contact with the oil residue under the hood. John

That's very true, John. Most of the old foam gasket material is just mush of some sort. That may well be the "tar" substance.

I don't know if it is correct or not but the Dr. Rebuild catalog shows an "Outer Firewall Core Cover Sealer" that they say is the "correct putty type material." The picture shows the piece in a gasket like shape.
