I am going to spray vinyl dye on the dash cap and door panel tops of my 56 to get thru the summer before I finish the resto next winter(just gotta drive it this summer). Do I need to do any special prep or apply any type of pre-coating to make it stick? Also, any suggestions on the best product? Thanks.

Re: Vinyl Dye
Just get it real good and clean. I usually wipe with lacquer thinner just before spraying. I have usually used MarHyde products, but have used others with equally good results. If you are using spray cans, be sure to get enough material on the surface that it will "flow" a bit or you can get a dry, grainy appearance. I prefer to get it in a qt. can and use a small touch up gun if I'm going to do enough area to justify the cost of the larger amount of material. It works on interior fiberglass panels pretty well, too. They make a special primer for this stuff to be used on surfaces other than vinyl, but I have used it without the primer with good results. (only on interior surfaces).- Top

Re: Vinyl Dye
Steve & Ed
I am not C1 fluent but have a little experience with C2 & C3 interiors, lacquer thinner can remove the texture on dash pads and other panels, Prep so; my be safer.
Al Knoch sells color matched dye in quarts and I have had very good luck with their product.

Caution!
Some vinyl/leather dyes state specifically NOT to use a petroleum based agent to clean/prep the surface! SEM makes a special vinyl prep spray for exactly this purpose (getting textured surface clean and opening pores in plastic to accept uniform penetration of spray dye agents). In doing vinyl re-color & color freshening, the SECRET is almost exclusively in surface prep. If not prepared correctly, the resulting color can wind up being irregular/blotchy AND subject to chipping when touched/rubbed.
