"Vettepeople", I need some info real soon as the '58 will be lost. There's a '58 in a yard around here and the owner said that I could have it if I cleaned his yard. The car is in pretty bad shape. There is an engine with two carbs, a fair interior with seats, hardtop, no chrome and moss over the lower part of the body, that's the good part. The frame is so rusted that I could stick my finger through it in places that should be solid metal. Now the question. Is there a replacement frame that I could use from another Chev auto that will work or do I need to get a '58 Vette only frame? I checked the archives but could not come up with the info. Thanks for your time and concern.

Re: 58 Frame replacement
Chuck--
Any 56-62 frame will work. (as will a 54 if you want to use an electronic fuel pump. There are variations on where/how rear bumpers bolt on, and whether or not there are rear radius rods or rear stabilizer bar, but they are essentially similar, especially if you're not doing an NCRS restoration. With the advent of the Newman chassis and others, it does seem that there are a few more solid-axle frames around--plus there are at least two excellent reproductions now available. You'll probably find that the frame is only one of many problems with a car that age--everything else will want to break off rather than back off. (And it's tough to take a torch to pieces mounted to the body to heat them before removing them). but--that's a no-brainer. Buy the roses, the help of some inexpensive kids (to both help with yard clean-up and car removal, and get that thing out of there! Good luck!

New frame source
Paul Newman from Car Creations sells a new reproduction frame for '53-'62s for $6k. He claims it's much better than the other reproductions. I can't say whether this is actually true, but I think I believe him. They are at (805) 226-9201 or www.carcreationsinc.com- Top
