'63 roadster with a Muncie 4 speed. Getting the shifter to move all the way to the left is the hard part. Once the shifter is in position, it goes into reverse very smoothly. It seems like the "pull up" mechanism isn't doing its job. I have never had the shifter out, and I'm not sure how the pull-up functions. Any words of wisdom ?

Re: Mid-year, trouble shifting into reverse
Unscrew the shifter ball. Remove spring. Pull shifter T out. Note that the
thin rod is held in place with a set screw. The rod is bent over at 90 degrees. Loosen set screw and make sure rod is all the way down. Then tighten and reassemble. An easy cure which my '65 needs every couple of years. I do not know why the rod slips up but all of a sudden I can not get into reverse: But the easy cure seems to fix it for awhile.- Top

Thanks for the reply.
I don't want to appear too thick, but how do you remove the spring ? I can't see anything to remove that will release the "T", but I'm probably looking right past it.

Re: Mid-year, trouble shifting into reverse
Steve,
-----Jack is describing how to fix a 64 up shifter with this problem.I know very little about 63 shifters but I do know that they are completly different. It does sound as though your neutral gate has gotten out of whack. Are any of the adjustments on the shift rods loose? There is undoubtedly someone on the board who has the answer,so Ill stop trying to trouble-shoot something I know very little about..........Bill S- Top

Re: Mid-year, trouble shifting into reverse
Steve, start by checking the neutral gate alignment. There is a procedure for doing this in the '63 shop manuial on page 7-15. It talks about a small tool, but with the boot out of the way you can generally eleball the alignment while in neutral well enough to get you going.- Top

Re: Mid-year, trouble shifting into reverse
Jack, Bill & Bill
The car is an early 63, but the transmission is a Muncie; obviously changed out at some time. I pulled the boot off and removed the shift lever. It has a small plate and two 3/8 bolts that hold it in place. There was nothing attached to the bottom of the "T" sleeve. The bottom of the sleeve is open, and when you pull up on the T, looking from the bottom, you can see something move, but it is not very near the opening. There is a small hole in the side of the sleeve at the bottom, but there is no connector pin or screw. So, the T isn't connected to anything, and it's not obvious what it should be connected to.
If you number the shifter plates (I don't know what else to call them, connections?) 1,2,3 from left to right, then #1 is for 3rd & 4th gears, #2 is for 1st & 2nd; I can see this from operating the shifter. Then by elimination, #3 ( the most inboard one) must be for reverse. I can't think of any thing else to help describe the shifter.
