    Carpet dye

There was a good thread on the board yesterday re: vinyl dye. I have some of the same questions re: carpet dye.

Prep : Does carpet have to be removed ?

Does it have to be cleaned ? If so, how?

Product : Brand names with good results ?

Application : How is it applied; spray, dip soak ?

    Re: Carpet dye

I dyed a spot on some carpet (red) with so-so results. Used the same vinyl dye in a spray can. Bulk would have been better. The dye needs to be brushed to get it into the nap of the carpet. I think used car dealers and detail shops use this type of material. I wouldn't recommend it on anything except a black carpet. As relatively inexpensive as carpet is for most of the vintage cars, I'm not sure it's worth the effort. If you just need to do a spot, it might be ok. Check with a detail shop in your area. They may have a better mouse trap.

------Ive got a friend that restored a 68 with gunmetal interior. When he recived the carpet it was silver, and not even close to the original darker gray.He bought a new garbage can, alot of Rit dye,and mixed up a batch o dye.Dipped the molded carpets in pulled em out and put em out in the sun to dry.He had great results.
------Ive spray dyed carpets with all types of stuff and,at best, its a temporary fix,but can look real good for awhile!..........Bill S

And it can play havoc with white or light-colored shoes, Bill.
