'56 Rear End and Axle Housings

Once again, with my books at the restorers, I find I must turn to the wisdom of the board for my question. I am pretty certain that the rear end and axle housings on my '56 came from the factory with no finish or paint! Correct? My problem is that while they are in very good shape they look bad as they are rusty and oil stained etc. What is the correct way to return these without taking them out of the car? Also, are the springs, shackles, etc., left natural? Thanks.

Re: '56 Rear End and Axle Housings

The rear axle housing was brought into the factory at the start of the chassis line completely painted in medium gloss black. There were many yellow inspection and identifying marks on it. The spring leafs were also medium gloss black perhaps with a silver top leaf and a swatch of yellow paint on the rearmost eyelets. The liners were unpainted as were the stainless bands and rubber gaskets. The differential filler hole was plugged with a disposable plastic plug.

After chassis assembly AND as a last operation before body drop, the chassis was painted with an asphaltic base high gloss black paint that covered all the inspection marks, shim marks, frame stencil, brake & fuel lines, exhaust system and springs.

This paint literally disappeared after two to five years when the carriers and solvents evaporated leaving only solids which washed or vibrated off.
