My SWC is an August 63 car with base (non-power) brakes. In my search for a correct master cylinder, a prominent vendor told me that very late 63's such as mine do not have thumbwheel type #5462389 master cylinder. The judging manual does not mention any mid year change. Do I need a thumbwheel type or a 1964 type?

Re: 1963 Master Cylinder
The Judging Guide sits silent on the issue of MC cap fastener on std brake cars other than stating they were thumb screws. However, it DOES document a running change on pwr brake cars:
"1963 - The power brake master cylinder is identical to the base unit with two exceptions. The master cylinder casting contains a bleeder screw on the boss facting the engine, and after early 1963 production (date uncertain) the thumb screw is replaced with a hex-head bolt to give greater hood clearance."
Any configuration different from this/these, would require official advice from the National Team Leader (contact listed in your copy of Restorer Magazine). But, this may be why you're getting the advice you did--mental confusion of pwr vs. std brake setup....- Top

Re: 1963 Master Cylinder
Thanks for your help. I suppose the thumbscrew type is the safe route if I can find one with a date code close to the August build date. That might be fun to find, hee hee. I saw one in the Driveline with a January date code, but that is a stretch for an August car. Thanks again!- Top
