I heard that when you race a small block and when the dipstick reads full that you should add one more quart of oil because it runs dry at high rpm's when you have a high volume oil pump. Is this true? Is it the same with a big block? Will adding 1 more quart of oil over the full line blow gaskets out? How about using 20w 50 oil? Thanks in advance

Re: Oil capacity , small block vs big block
even stock BB oil pumps will run the pan low because there is so much oil held upstairs and can not drain back fast enought. the biggest problem with BB is the piddler valve lifters, and a good cure is the change to edge orifice lifters but this will cut down on the amount of oil to the valve train by 20% so i would use roller rockers to be on the safe side. running 1 quart over is still recommended by chevy for racing even for the new C-5 with the LS-1 engines.- Top
