Are the correct exhaust stud crimp nuts ('67 SB) supposed to be zinc plated or steel?

They're called, "Stover Nuts" and appeared in plain steel. The threaded holes are elliptical in shape and when installed are deformed to a circle to engage the stud. The elasticity of the steel, in trying to maintain an ellipse, clamps the nut to the stud much like a lock washer.

That's the correct original part number for the exhaust stud nuts and they are still available from GM under that number. However, it's possible that the actual finish on the nuts may have changed over the years. So, if the originals were un-plated, the current-issue may be plated and vice-versa.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
