The 73-74 grilles were of zinc diecast material. For 73, the leading edge was chrome and the rest of the grille painted semi-flat black. For 1974, the grilles were the painted entirely semi-flat black with no chrome leading edge. There were 3 grille sections---left, center, and right.
The 75-79 grilles were of black plastic material. They were not painted or otherwise finished. There were only left and right grilles; no center grille was used. The mounting system for the 75-79 grilles are completely different than the 73-74.

At 2001 Carlisle I saw a center grille that was plastic, not metal, that appeared to have the same look, spacing of the horizontal ribs and outside frame, as that of a 73-74 center grille. It was laying on top of a GM parts box, so I figured it was for a post 74 Corvette.
