    Re: Corvette Insurance

    Jeremy:

    My father-in-law and I use Grundy Worldwide, P.O. Box 1957, Horsham, PA 19044,(215) 674-1856.

I called around to about five-six different agencies before settling with them. They offer unlimited pleasure driving mileage, and most restriction are reasonable (i.e. car must be garage kept; no one under 21 can operate it; can't be used as the daily work driver/grocery getter). They also offer true agreed upon value. I'd caution you to ask whomever you go with about agreed upon value ahead of time. One of the big-name companies advertised this (even had it on their web site), but agreed upon value to them was them telling you what they thought your car was worth and you agreeing to it to get the insured. We have had no problems with Grundy, but fortunately, neither of us have had to file a claim (the true test of "goodness"). Good luck.

            George -

Your Allstate agent can write an ordinary auto policy (which will pay you NADA bluebook or some other depreciated formula amount) in the event of a total loss, but Allstate can't/won't write an "agreed value" policy that will pay you a higher "agreed" value; you have to go to a "collector" insurer for that kind of coverage. There are about 20 of those out there, and almost all of them except Hagerty and Great American offer only "trailer queen" coverage - only for parades, to/from organized club events, on the show field, or locked in your garage, with no stops on the way (they define stops enroute as "errands", which are specifically prohibited), blahblahblah. Those outfits all lie in their ads and say "pleasure driving allowed", but THEY define what "pleasure driving" is, not you, and bury it deep in the restrictions/limitations/exclusions/definitions sections in the back of the policy that nobody ever reads or understands. Hagerty and Great American are the two most flexible in this area, and cover your car the way most of us really use them. Grundy is the Grand Champion of deception in this area - they won't even send you a sample policy to read unless you send them a premium check first, and if you call them and ask specific questions about what kind of "pleasure driving" they allow, their answers will scare you to death. Based on my family's 70 years in the insurance business, I'd hazard a guess that 90% of the people with Corvettes covered by "collector" policies are NOT insured for the way they use their cars.

Hagerty also insures Antique and Classis WOODEN boats (which most insurances companies won't even touch). I have my 1939 ChrisCraft insured with Hagerty, as do most of my fellow antique boat owners , and we are very happy with the service and premiums. However, I insure my Corvette with AAA for a number of reasons. They have no millage restrictions and the replacement value has been set by an authorized appraisal. In addition I can utilize their winter lay up policy, which continues fire and theft only for the winter months, with a phone call in the fall and then again in the spring. The winter lay up policy is also a money saver as they send me a check for the difference in premium.

Hagerty has been good ,although I've had no claims. They just raised the "agreed value" and the premium based on what prices are for a 70 at shows. I had a choice of keeping the old or going for the increase.
