56-7 asphaltic base gloss black chassis paint

Does anyone know of any more durable method of finishing off 56/7 frames. I've seen the asphaltic base refered to several times as to the original finishing on chassis. The discreption from Dale Pearman (Tuesday, 26 March 2002, at 6:02 a.m.) shed a lot of light not only on the type of finish but as to why the under carriage on my 57 looks as it does. My quandry is that while I like to keep my 57 original condition, I also drive/enjoy it regularly (not daily but frequently) so I need something more time/weather durable than the asphaltic base but would like to maintain original appearences.

I did my 62, Top Flight & Bloomington with the asphaltic 10 year's ago and have drove the car 10,000 miles now. Since then I have done 2 more car's and used the PPG DP-90 which is a med. gloss epoxy primer. Very durable, and now I wish I would have put it on my car. john

I used DP-90 (flattened about 20%) to paint my '57 frame five years (and 5,000 miles) ago, and I think it's an excellent compromise between correct appearance and modern durability; still looks like it did five years ago, and the usual road grime and dirt, rain splash, etc. just falls off when I hit it with a hose and it's clean again.
