I just found out my 72 is supposed to have a front lower spolier that was not there when i bought it. It is supposed to be made of black plastic. Is this something i should have to deflect air into the radiator at high speeds to make it run cooler? It runs fine now and does not overheat. I do not have a front license plate on it now but i was going to put one on and this will restrict the air flow. I have a 180 degree thremostat in it. Thanks in advance. Eric

Re: 72 FRONT LOWER SPOILER *TL*
Eric,
You didn't say if your intention is to have your car judged, or if your are more interested in function. If for judging, be aware that there are minor configuration differences between what Chevrolet sells, what aftermarket suppliers sell (yes the spoiler is also available from Corvette suppliers)and the original. Fit and function will be acceptable, but you will lose minor points in judging.

Re: 72 FRONT LOWER SPOILER
Terry-----
At least part of the difference is due to the fact that for 68-72 PRODUCTION, 2 different extensions were used. 1968-69 used GM #3932933; 1970-72 used GM #3974013. In May, 1970, the GM #3932933 extension was discontinued from SERVICE and replaced by the GM #3974013 extension which continues to be available to this day to SERVICE all 1968-72 Corvette applications. However, I'm not even certain if the 3974013 currently available in SERVICE is exactly the same as the original PRODUCTION part (or old stock SERVICE parts). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 72 FRONT LOWER SPOILER *TL*
One of the SERVICE spoilers is decorated with the part number - a feature that is missing from the PRODUCTION piece (regardless of the year of production, at least within 1968-1972). They were nice enough to emboss that part number into the passenger side of the spoiler, so it is not merle a matter of removing some ink stamp.
The reproduction (at least one reproduction - I have no idea how many reproduction iterations there may be) has a series of small protrusions on the back of the lower reinforcing ridge. I believe with some careful hand work these could be removed without materially damaging the spoiler.
I am not aware of configuration differences in original spoilers between the years 1968-1972, but I am open to detailed explanations.
