What color shifter ball for 68's?

Right now, its black chrome. Should it just be chrome?

John, I had a '68 many years ago, that came with the black chrome ball. I think they were offered with either.

I suppose that it's possible that some 68s were originally supplied with the black chrome shifter ball, but I sort of doubt it. The chrome ball, GM #3857160, was supposed to have been used for all 1964-68 Corvettes. Interestingly, it was also used for 1969 Corvettes with 3 speed manual transmission. The black chrome ball, GM #3960608, was used for all 69-76 Corvettes with 4 speed transmission.

I suppose that it's possible that some 68s were originally supplied with the black chrome shifter ball, but I sort of doubt it. The chrome ball, GM #3857160, was supposed to have been used for all 1964-68 Corvettes. Interestingly, it was also used for 1969 Corvettes with 3 speed manual transmission. The black chrome ball, GM #3960608, was used for all 69-76 Corvettes with 4 speed transmission.

...and then they finally figured out that the plain chrome ball gets MUCH hotter in direct sun than the black chrome. Thus, they went to the black chrome.

I'd keep the black one on, and only use the plain chrome if I was getting it NCRS judged.

In revising the 1968-69 Judging Guide last year, we had no response that 1968s came with anything but the chrome shifter knob. I personally have never seen one with the black.

I bought my 68 in 71 with 31,000 miles on it and the shifter was chrome.
