    Gas Tanks and Tags

The original gas tank on my '64 is severely rusted and with at least one hole. This tank is embossed with O. L. Anderson logo. Quanta offers a replacement of this manufacture. Another supplier offers, per original, a tank with A. O. Smith logo. Which one or are both logos correct?

The transmission is a Muncie M-21 close ratio in combination with 365 SHP engine and 3.70 rear. What is the correct stamped aluminum tag number, affixed to one of the cover bolts, for this transmission?

    Thank you for your help.

    Re: Gas Tanks and Tags

I've never yet seen or heard of an AO Smith logo on, or sourcing of, any gas tanks.

        Patrick---

        A. O. Smith never manufactured any fuel tanks for Corvettes; they manufactured most of the frames, many of the body components for 63+ Corvettes, and, even, complete mid-year bodies, but no fuel tanks.

The O. L. Anderson Company was the manufacturer for most Corvette fuel tanks. They've been out of business for over 10 years, and GM now uses another manufacturer for the 63-74 Corvette SERVICE fuel tanks. Quanta is somehow licensed to use the O. L. Anderson Company logo, "OLA", and has that embossed on the tanks manufactured by another supplier (most likely the same one that GM uses to supply the tanks which it sells without the logo).

Incidentally, the logo is impossible to see with the spare tire carrier mounted in the car.

            Re: '64 Muncie side-cover Tag

Patrick --- I'm on thin ice here, as I don't have the '64 AIM, but I believe your L76/3.70 combination would call for trans tag 3839601; this would define close-ratio gearing with the 3.70/4.11 (smaller diameter 8-tooth) speedo sender gear on the trans tailshaft.

Other '64 tags were "602" for wide ratio trans; "603" for close-ratio trans and the same sender gear (larger dia., 8-tooth) as the wide ratio; and "604" for the 4.56 differential (with a special 6-tooth sender gear).

BTW, the tag is steel and shown (dimensioned) in Noland's Vol 2, page 147. I believe that this tag is not mentioned in the judging guides and tech manuals.
