    Midyear Differential Cap

My 66 roadster has a rear differential cap with what looks to be a 5/8" square exposed end for unscrewing. The problem is I can't get enough clearance and leverage with a standard open end wrench to loosen it. Is there a square socket tool available to connect to a ratchet? Or, is there another way to go about this?

Usually, a 12 point 3/4" socket will get the job done. If the plug is extraordinarily tight, seized, or rusted, the socket might slip on the square head plug. But, in most cases, it will work just fine.

Yes, you can get a socket for the square plug from a tool supplier. 5/8" square

Thanks for the advise guys. Joe, the 3/4 12 point wouldn't fit (too loose and slipped) and Wayne, the local tool guys looked at me like I was crazy. So, I did the only thing I could. I removed the spare tire and carrier and loosened the cap with a 5/8" box end wrench. It was a nice day anyway...

I have them, so I know that they are available. Try a tool truck like Snap-on Or maybe the Sears tool catalog.
